Am I at risk for getting diarrhea?
You are at an increased risk for diarrhea if you are taking a trip to a developing country where water or food supplies may be contaminated. This is known as Traveler's Diarrhea. Always be cautious when traveling, especially in foreign countries. If you have a compromised or severely weakened immune system, and are taking certain medicines, you may be more susceptible as well. Poor hygiene and less than suitable food preparation standards also increases one's risk for developing diarrhea.
What can I do to limit my chances of getting diarrhea?
Diarrhea prevention, often times, begins with cleanliness. You can help prevent the spread of viral diarrhea by washing your hands and ensuring that your children wash their hands. Proper food preparation and storage is also a must. Additionally, use dairy products that have been pasteurized, serve food immediately after cooking (or reheating), and never eat food that has been left out for long periods of time.
I've heard that over-the-counter medications can stop my diarrhea. Is this true?
No. Although products purchased at the store may indeed slow the progression of diarrhea and its related symptoms, they will not speed recovery. In addition, some of these medications can make diarrhea worse by preventing your body from ridding itself of the organism or infection that is causing your diarrhea.
When should I contact my doctor?
At-home treatments are usually effective when dealing with diarrhea symptoms. However there are certain circumstances that may warrant physician assistance, including the inability to tolerate any food or drink, if you start to show signs of dehydration, diarrhea persists for more than 3-4 days, develop a high-grade fever, have severe abdominal pain, bloody, or tar-like stools, and if symptoms become progressively worse. Persons with an underlying medical condition, the elderly, and infants should receive medical attention when diarrhea first begins as a precautionary means to avoid any potential complication.
